Six Things that Make Me Happy - When I Grow Up
Six Things that Make Me Happy - When I Grow Up Its Shut Off Your Brain day today (that should be an official holiday). With 8 whole people in my office, a drizzly cold mist over NYC and me stuck in at work to support people who arent here, I was just going to skip the post this week and wish everyone a Happy Channakwanzakkuh and be back with Freaking (Great Links) Friday. Then I came across this post and wanted to indulge myself by joining in, too. Its hard to limit myself to just Six Things that Make Me Happy, but here they are: 1. Snuggling on the couch with my babeh No, he usually doesnt come with a robe and a teaset (nor is he usually in a cabin in a rainforest) but that doesnt matter to me. Lying down on the couch and watching TV or a movie with Luke is one of the things I do that make me happiest. Add some popcorn and wine and Id never leave the house. 2. A bubble bath, complete with a great novel/fashion magazine and a good glass of wine (Rubby Ducky not entirely necesary) I can stay here for hours. Add some quiet jazzy-like tunes and I may just take a nap. 3. Seeing a show with my Mom A meal and a show always makes for a special day with my Mom. On Sunday were seeing Pal Joey on Broadway and I think she has something up her sleeve for my birthday on 1/14, if I let her. Weve been to hundreds of shows together but each one is special. 4. Grilled cheese with tomato on rye bread Yes, I love a good lobster, but give me grilled cheese with tomato on rye Im not fancy, Im from Strong Island. Throw in some sweet potato fries and I might die from happiness. 5. The Boiler Room Episode on My So-Called Life My favorite episode on any TV series ever. Ask any woman in their late 20s-mid 30s about Jordan Catalano and listen to all the collective sighs. 6. D*** in a Box I kept this on my DVR until we had to turn it in, since it guaranteed me milk-coming-out-of-my-nose laughs at every viewing, even when a viewing turned into dozens of viewings. I still think the censored version is funnier you can view it here. This Christmas Eve, think about Six Things that Make Your Happy and make sure you have time for them before the New Year. Or make sure theyre included in your plans for 09. Or leave me a comment and share them. Or write your own list on your own blog. Really, there are multiple things for you to do with this list. Enjoy your holidays this week!

These Are the 5 Fastest-Growing Six-Figure Jobs in America
These Are the 5 Fastest-Growing Six-Figure Jobs in America If you want to make six figures you donât need to look much further than these five jobs. Out of the 62 occupations paying a median $100k salary, the jobs in this chart below are the only ones expected to add 50,000 or more employees to their workforce by 2026, based on an analysis of data provided by labor forecasting website Projections Central. Between them, theyâll open up 71,188 new job opportunities each year, accounting for 58% of the six-figure jobs added. Of the 57 other jobs with a median annual salary of $100,000 or above, about 90% of them are only expected to add up to 4,800 positions per year, and two are actually expected to lose part of their workforce â" but thatâs a non-issue for these developers, managers, and lawyers. App developers are poised to have more $100k-paying openings available to them than any other profession. Theyâre the ones who make a median $101,790 a year creating mobile and desktop apps. Not to be confused with a systems software developers, who use their computer science education to focus on the platforms that apps are used on, app developers are encouraged to major in computer science but can get a position making six figures as a self-taught coder. Theyâre being added at five times the rate as systems software developers (4,714 a year), and by 2026, app developers will exceed 1,000,000 employees â" twice that of their systems software counterparts. General and operations managers, meanwhile, might be adding fewer employees than app developers, but they make up the largest fraction of the overall six-digit-salary workforce in the U.S. Theyâre the office managers coordinating the day-to-day internal operations of their organization, or the head of the operations team that makes sure the company is running smoothly, with minimal risk. Generally, a bachelorâs degree in a business major will suffice for someone in this job category, meaning it wonât take more than two to four years to complete the requirements. If you want the highest salary of the fastest growing six figure jobs, head to the bank: Financial managers (bank branch managers, comptrollers, or financial directors) are making the most, with a median salary of $125,080. Theyâre adding the third most employees of any six-figure salary job, but will also be the rarest of the bunch by 2026. A role as a financial manager generally requires a bachelorâs degree in accounting or finance, at minimum. But further education in the form of a Masterâs degree or a CFA certification (Chartered Financial Analyst) is a crucial step in working your way up the ranks. Itâs the difference between being in the half thatâs under or over the $125,080 median annual salary. The last group identified is the vague job title of âmanagersâ, which are also expected to exceed a million employees by 2026. This group is reserved for people like social services managers or utilities managers, who oversee a team working in an environment more obscure than say a bank or a hospital. They require good leadership skills, like communication, delegation, and the ability to maintain order in the work place. Rounding out the list are lawyers â" who fall in at second in terms of pay â" and are the only ones on this short list required to get a graduate degree to apply for job. But all five of these offer a better chance at making a six-figure salary in the next five to seven years than any other job in the U.S.

Advice on how to be your own career coach
Advice on how to be your own career coachIf you feel frustrated by a lack of progress in your career, you might consider using the services of a professional career coach. A good career coach helps clients take inventory of where they are, work-wise, and where they want to be (and how they want to get there). Many jobseekers find this kind of support invaluable when they are looking to make major professional changes but, especially for people who might be out of work, the cost of a career coach might be prohibitive. Dont fret. You can be your own career coach, and take steps toward reaching your goals that wont cost you a dime. We collected advice that will help you platzdeckchen goals and reach for them, with only minimal cost involved. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Zero in on your goalsThe first step is to identify where you want to be heading in your career. Perhaps you are making plans for how to take your seat in the C-suite one day. Or, you may be looking to move out of one profession and into another. While different, these two scenarios have one thing in common planning. Whether you are plotting how youll get that big promotion, or are planning a lateral move into another industry, youll need to assess which critical skills you possess, and which youll need to cultivate to be successful. To ascertain this, youll need to study up.Look at LinkedIn in particular, the profiles of people who have the job you want. What skills and experience do they list that you are lacking? Next, look at job ads for positions that interest you. What are the skills and experience fruchtwein commonly being listed for those roles? How can you meet those requirements? In some instances, gathering valuable skills is fairly easy in others, you may need to play the long game and go back to school. In either scenario, knowing what employers are looking for and figuring out how to acquire those skills is critical. Set your goals and a timeline to achieve them.Keep a journalExperts agree that journaling can help jobseekers stay on track when theyre acting as their own career coach. It can also help you see where you are (on a day-to-day basis with goal achievement) and how much traction youve made on your journey. Journaling helps create an outlet, said Executive Therapeutic Life Coach Lisa Pepper-Satkin. It also allows you to process through questions you may discover in your job search.Buy a journal or keep an online diary. Use it daily, weekly, or monthly to keep yourself on track. Without a coach helping you track progress, writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a valuable tool. Not only is your journal the distribution policy for writing down your goals, the steps to achieve them, and a timeline for achieving them, but during times of frustration, a journal can help you track how far youve come. This can be very helpful when you are tempted to throw in the towel, or, if you have doubts about just how much youve achieved.Create accountabilityCareer coaches have tricks for keeping their clients motivated. But how can you keep yourself inspired? Pepper-Satkin suggests that asking a friend for support can help. Your goals dont need to be the same as your friends goal for this to work you just both must be dedicated to making a big change. Ask a friend to play big, Pepper-Satkin said. Regardless of what you are each working on, this will allow you to share in one anothers visions. While support is a huge element, its really the accountability that will help propel you forward.Commit to not buying each others excuses, she said. Set deadlines for yourselves and stick with them. Meet regularly, either in person or by phone to compare notes, check items off your list, and create new action items to be accomplished before your next meeting.Dont have a friend who is looking to make a big change? Search online for websites that offer tips on personal growth and professional development, or join an online coaching group, which will be more affordable than a private coach. Weve never seen as many career coaching programs online as we currently see. So, its easy to have access to affordable coaching in a group online, Pepper-Satkin said.Give your resume a faceliftAs you learn new skills, gather new experiences, or acquire new education, certification, or licensing, be aya that your resume reflects those achievements. Keeping an up-to-date resume will ensure that you are prepared for any new experiences that might come your way during this process.Plus, since your resume is often your first introduction to a recruiter, looks count. An entry-level resume will look different than an executive resume in many cases, so be sure your document reflects the image you are hoping to convey. Take into account both your industry and your stature within the industry when choosing a resume format. To make sure you hit the mark, consider putting a resume builder to use. Builders can prov ide resumes with both the look and the language needed to convey particular messages to potential employers.Ask for feedbackIf youre working to hone a new skill, figure out your next career move, or make a major professional change, know that feedback is an utterly critical element. So, how can you get feedback without a career coach? The answer is right at your fingertips, according to Pepper-Satkin.Social media can be a valuable, she said. Ask questions of your professional contacts either online or by arranging informational coffee dates with people whose advice you think will be valuable.Take risks with people by asking for honest feedback on what your next steps should be, she said. When it comes to feedback, asking for it from professionals whose work you admire might help you identify a mentor who could be willing to provide some free coaching.Dont be afraid to adjust your goalsLife is tricky, and its roads can be windy. This mean that you may find in this process that you are working towards a goal that doesnt feel quite right. This isnt a failure its actually part of the beauty of becoming your own career coach. The introspection it demands to set a goal and work towards it is invaluable. Youll learn both what works for you and what doesnt work.As you learn more about yourself and become more deliberate about the actions youre taking, you may find yourself changing course slightly. Thats okay its part of the point of these exercises. The goal is to move towards a role or a profession that feels personally satisfying to you. You may need to change your approach or your end goal during the course of your exploration to land in a distributions-mix that feels right for you.Author BioLiveCareer offers assistance to jobseekers at every step of the journey. 5 Habits of Famous Introverts
5 Habits of Famous Introverts Extroverts may be known for being outspoken and bringing the fun. But, throughout history, introverts have shaped our culture by making great social, technological and political contributions to our society. One common misconception about introverts is that they are shy. But, introversion and shyness are not synonymous. Introverts need for quiet and solitude does not necessarily mean that they are shying away from people it simply means that they need time to recharge. While extroverts gain their energy from social engagement, introverts draw their energy from being alone. It is in those moments of solitude that some of the top actors, thinkers, and politicians of our time have sharpened their greatness. The Top 5 Introvert Habitszu siche are five habits we should copy from famous introverts1. Escape the Everyday LifeAlbert Einstein once saidOne of the strongest motives that lead men to art and science is escape from everyday life. A finely tempered nature longs to escape from the personal life into the world of objective perception and thought.Tzu siche is no doubt that solitude and contemplation allow for deep thinking. Deep thinking paves the way for the development of wisdom and discernment. The direct result is making better decisions. Warren Buffet, the Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, attributes much of his success to his daily zeremoniell of creating time to think. Buffet saysI insist on a lot of time being spent, almost every day, to just sit and think. I read and think... and make less impulse decisions than most people in business.2. FocusIntroverts have a unique ability to focus on matters at hand and tune out the world around them. This ability leads to concentrate allows them to thrive to finish projects and even thrive during difficult moments. J.K.Rowling, the creator and author of Harry Potter, is a self-professed introvert. She is pre-disposed to spending long periods of time in deep thought letting her creat ive imagination take gestalt. This deep focus even allowed her to tune out the world during a delayed train commute where the idea of Harry Potter welches conceived.Interestingly, J.K.Rowling was suffering from depression at the time. She had just lost her mother, relocated to another country, went through a divorce and was left to raise her daughter as a single mom. Despite the adversity she was facing, she chose to focus her time and energy on creating Harry Potter. The rest is now history. TV political journalist George Stephanopulos, is also an introvert who has learned how to harness the power of focus by incorporating meditation into his life. He is known to begin his days at 215am to meditate and focus his mind. 3. Develop Strong ConvictionsPerhaps because introverts cultivate time alone in deep thought, they develop strong convictions and a sense of justice that shapes their characters. A conviction is a firmly held belief grounded in knowledge and experience. Conviction ins pires people to stand strong in the face of great opposition. Rosa Parks was an African-American woman who was reserved and introverted. Her convictions against racism led her to not give up her seat to a white man on a city bus in the 1960s despite the legal ramifications. Her courage helped to fuel the civil rights movement in America. Eleanor Roosevelt, the longest-serving First Lady in American history, was also an introvert and a woman of conviction. Eleanor Roosevelt was a strong advocate for women and the underprivileged. She fought against racism and worked in support of international human rights.4. PreparePreparation is an introverts secret sauce. Preparation lays a foundation for excellence in any course of action and implementing this important component of success comes naturally for introverts. Because introverts are able to focus and think situations and projects through before taking action, they can execute well. Their natural bent towards finding alone time to crea te cognitive space also allows them to move at their own pace moving as fehlte nicht viel or as slow as needed to develop mastery.Oscar Award-winning actress Meryl Streep is an introvert. She invests countless hours researching and preparing to fully immerse herself into a character. Her preparation has led to her being the most Oscar-nominated actor. Another introvert, Elon Musk the CEO and Product Architect of Tesla Motors attributes his great public speaking ability to his preparation. Musk says,Im basically like an introverted engineer, so, it took a lot of practice and effort to be able to go up on stage and not just stammer basically... As the CEO, you kind of have to.Finally, President Barack Obama is an introvert who spent alarge amount of time studying history, reading presidential biographies, and conversing with presidential scholars to better understand his own role in history so that he could govern effectively.5. Connect with Others One-on-OneIntroverts are more comfo rtable connecting with others one-on-one. Introverts use this to their advantage. Rather than connecting with people in large group events, introverts tischset up lunch dates, dinners, and outings with those they want to get to know. These one-on-one opportunities allow introverts to get to know others on a more personal basis deeper and more meaningful connections with others are developed. For introverts in leadership positions, this can also foster loyalty. Trust is forged, ideas are shared, and bonds are solidified.Additionally, introverts tend to have strong emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive how others are feeling. Because introverts spend the time to reflect, they tend to be aware of their own feelings and this makes them more sensitive to how others feel. Also, introverts often do more listening than talking. These skills are key in helping introverts to form important partnerships. American inventor and Co-Founder of Apple, Steve Wozn iak is an introvert who liked to work alone, but also understands the importance of relationships. His long-time friendship and partnership with Steve Jobs led to defining our age of technology.Famous IntrovertsWarren BuffettHillary ClintonAlbert EinsteinLady GagaMahatma GandhiAudrey HepburnElton JohnAbraham LincolnElon MuskBarack ObamaLarry PageRosa ParksEleanor RooseveltJ.K.RowlingSteven SpielbergGeorgeStephanopulosMeryl StreepSteve WozniakMark ZuckerbergLeveraging Emotional IntelligenceIntroverted personality types may be quiet or shy in social situations, but the personality traits of these introverted leaders have led them to become successful introverts. Thats because the power of introverts is unlike any other personality type. The aforementioned habits, if practiced on a regular and consistent basis cultivate leadership. Escaping the everyday life to be introspective focusing on matters at hand developing strong convictions and beliefs preparing for opportunities and develop ing meaningful relationships puts you on track to your personal best. Introvert and Hall of Fame baseball champion Joe DiMaggio once said, A person always doing his or her best becomes a natural leader, just by example.--Ellie Nieves, JD, MBA, develops webinars, seminars, and coaching programs to help high achieving women show up, speak up, and step up in their careers. Ace Your Next Video Interview 8 Proven Tips Ace Your Next Video Interview 8 Proven Tips If you landed yourself a video bewerbungsgesprch, congratulations Youre almost there. Now its time to prepare for success and brush up on video interview tips so you can get closer to landing the job.mora companies are conducting online interviews behauptung days. Thats because it can be really efficient, for both the candidate and the company.Although its easy to write off an online interview as the same as an in-person interview, there are subtle differences in which to prepare.Tips for a Successful Video InterviewPreparationHaving a video interview does not mean you shouldnt take it seriously. Treat it as if you were interviewing in person. You should thoroughly research the company, its industry, its products, and its achievements so youre prepared to discuss them during your interview. Additionally, the Internet has made it incredibly simple to familiarize yourself with your interviewer befor e you meet them virtually- HR professionals are generally very active on LinkedIn and a quick Google search will shed some light on who youre meeting. Also remember to prepare some questions to ask of the interviewer yourself when the time comes.PunctualityFor an in-person interview, its courteous to show up approximately 10 minutes early. Its the same for a video interview, except its for more than just showing that youre a punctual person. You want to be early to your online interview because it may take you a while to log on. For example, if the company uses a video conferencing software youve never used, it might take some time to download the application. Youll want to make sure you do all this beforehand so that youre ready to go at your interview time. Being late for the interview, no matter what the reason, is not a good way to start a successful online interview.TechnologyIt would be a letdown if you found out that your microphone or webcam didnt work right before your inte rview. When preparing for your video interview, there are three main components to testAudio settings Do your speakers and microphone work? Make sure you are coming across clear and loud with no static.Camera settings Is it too dark? Too light? Too distracting in the hintergrund? Its best to sit in front of solid colored wall with plenty of light. This way, the interviewer will focus on you and not the decor behind youInternet connection This is often overlooked, but it may be wise to ensure youre plugged in with an Ethernet cable for a hard connection. Video conferencing may take up a lot of bandwidth and a spotty Wi-Fi connection may cause an overly lagged session.Youll also want to familiarize yourself with the software being used for the interview. Zoom, HireVue, GoToMeeting, Skype, and Google Hangouts are some common platforms. Consider signing up for a free trial, watch tutorial videos, or do whatever you have to do to familiarize yourself with the tool.Environment/SettingChoo se your location very carefully. Be wary of places like coffee shops or coworking spaces, because youll want to avoid the sounds of coffee grinders and other people in the background. You also dont want to interview in a place where theres a lot of visual distractions, either. Try to find an area with a plain wall to use as your backdrop, and make sure that your lighting isnt creating a glare or shadow. The ideal setting for a video interview is a secluded room in which you can shut out any distractions. Avoid being near windows against busy streets, and make sure children and pets are out of the house or being supervised to be sure youll have a distraction-free environment.Speak Slowly and ClearlyWhen using technology for a video interview, there can be delays or the microphone may not pick up your voice well. To prevent this from happening, take your time when speaking and enunciate your words. This will make sure that your interviewer can hear and understand you.Listen CarefullyKe ep your mind from drifting off and focus on listening when the interviewer speaks. Pay close attention to what the interviewer is saying. Sometimes when youre on avideo job interview, its easy to accidentally cut someone off due to audio delays or from not paying attention to nonverbal cues. To avoid this, listen carefully to the interviewer and wait a few seconds before speaking to avoid cutting in.AttireAttire is one of the most frequently overlooked video interview tips. Even though an online interview usually means the interviewer wont see anything from the waist down, it doesnt mean you should only dress up the upper half of your body. You may need to stand up to grab something in the middle of the interview, which would reveal your mismatched bottoms. Avoid this risk and wear interview clothes from head to toe. View yourself through your webcam to make sure your outfit looks professional on camera as well.Body LanguageYour body language in a video interview can convey a lot of things about who you are as a person. You can present a positive image by ensuring youre sitting up straight with good posture. Place both feet on the ground, and avoid doing things like slouching or holding your head up with your hand. And always try to keep your hands in your lap to avoid distracting gesturing or fiddling. Its also important to pay attention to where youre looking. Looking at the interviewers face on your computer screen means youre not actually looking into the camera and making eye contact. Instead, look into the camera as often as possible, especially when youre speaking. This will give your interviewer the sense that youre engaged and not distracted by whats happening on your screen. While it may seem like a lot to remember, these video interview tips can help you adjust to the intricacies of interacting with a remote team.
